Q: If I have 2 sites do I need a VoIP phone system in each location?
Q: Is my current telephone system VoIP call compatible?
A: Yes, it is compatible. You do not need a particular VoIP phone to make VoIP calls. VoIP phones have features that allow above and beyond inexpensive phone calls. For example they allow you to connect multiple offices and improve productivity without adding more staff.
Q: Can my current provider give me VoIP calls?
A: Many phone line providers do offer VoIP service. But most of these providers only offer residential/home applications and do not have the ability to provide quality service needed by a business.
Q: Do I need a phone system to make VoIP phone calls?
A: No, Skype is a common provider of single phone VoIP, which is used without a phone system.
Q: Do I need VoIP phone to make VoIP phone calls?
A: YES. You cannot use a normal handset to make VoIP phone calls (without a phone system). Bottom line is you will need to purchase a VoIP telephone handset.
Q: I have heard that the quality can be poor with VoIP, is this true?
A: It depends on who the provider, their service, and your internet speed. All three must be at best quality and your VoIP calls will sound the same as normal phone calls. If one of these is not in sync your calls will experience latency, dropped calls, and poor sound quality.
Q: How do I get VoIP call quality?
A: Most importantly you need a quality, high speed internet connection and the best Quality of Service Routers with Voice Prioritisation. Voice and Data will both travel across your data network under a VoIP solution. You may not notice if a data packet is sent a couple of seconds slow, but you would notice with a slow voice packet thru a lack of sound and distortion. The “latency” experienced can be extinguished with the Quality of Service router.
Q: What happens if my VoIP Network goes down?
A: If your network goes down you will not be able to receive or make phone calls. If your supplier does not allow for redundancy you should plan a backup. For example keeping just a couple of regular phone lines will allow your phone system to automatically switch over if your network should falter.
Q: Do I need to change my broadband service for VoIP phone systems?
A: As the speed of your data service has a direct impact on your call quality, it would be best to contact your provider beforehand to see if the service you have will support VoIP. The lack of speed from a basic internet connection will make your VoIP calls sound distorted.
Q: What is a managed or hosted PBX?
A: Managed or hosted simply means that the phone system is not in your office. You will have the VoIP handsets which are controlled by a selected provider in the offices. You do not own, or control a managed PBX.
Q: What is a premise based VoIP PBX?
A: A normal system will come with a control box, mounted on the wall. Digital/VoIP handsets connect to this main equipment which you have full control over.
Q: What are the benefits of a premise-based VoIP PBX vs. a hosted PBX?
A: Premise-based solutions allow you to admin all aspects of your own phone system. They are more reliable but again can be a bit more expensive if you decide to go with VoIP handsets.
Q: Can I scale the phone system?
A: Scaling your phone is possible on most VoIP phone systems the same as any normal phone system. We need to know what kind of expansion you see for your business so we can find the right solution to fit your business now and in the future.
Q: If I have 2 sites do I need a VoIP phone system in each location?
A: You can have a phone system in each site, or just in one of them. Having one in both of them is a preferred setup so you can have VoIP handsets in each and is reliable across the VPN. If it comes down to cost having one in a single office will work with the same results.
